Keywords (an overview)


Before you start marketing your website, you will need to select a keyword- what people will type in the search engine. Any search engine, that is. Through out the web, every word/phrase (aka keywords) is searched so many times a month: some keywords are searched 80,000+ times a month, while some are only searched 5 or less a month/year.

This is how your website will receive visitors (through this method, anyways). Start thinking of both creative and generic phrases that describe your site. If you need help, visit the adwords link on the bottom of this page. By typing in your url, you can receive keyword suggestions.

Now, back to the overview. The more traffic (visitors) any word/phrase gets, the more traffic every time someone searches your phrase/word you will get- in general. However, you will need to choose a keyword that fits your site, as well as receives a steady amount of visitors. Look below for an explanation:

Example: Lets say you want to start a website on electric mower information. Your website appears on google (the first result) whenever someone searches for: mower. If there was 50,000 searches a month (just a guess, not researched), you may only get 10,000 visits a month. Why!? Some people that typed in mower wanted to buy mowers, some people wanted gas mower information, and others wanted to sell their mower.

Now pretend your website is on the first page (first result) of google for when someone searches for: Blue Green Super Fast Electric Mower with a Solar Panel. You would not receive any visitors because nobody will search for that. Although this is a "goofy" example, some meaningful keywords to your site may have similar results. 

Now lets say you are the first result when someone googles: electric mower information. Even though there may be 1,000 searches a month, you may be getting 700 visitors a month. This is because you are offering what the most people are looking for. (It is normal to get less visitors a month than the keyword's searchers)

Why not to go for the keywords that have alot of searches?


Although it may be tempting to try to go for the keywords that get 80,000+ searches a month, be warned...


It will take too much work to get to the top and keep your position on the first page for a very highly searched (if you want to market it for free). Instead, I would recommend going for a keyword with 1,500-5,000 searches a month (don't worry, you will still get visits and possibly customers). That is how you found this site! It will be a lot easier to keep your position. In this example, I would recommend going for electric mower information/electric mower info- both are separate searches, so being on both will increase traffic. However, you do not have to work any harder to be on both!

Note: Even though these are only for google, they will still show what is popular. Also, once you are on google, you should be on other search engines. This is covered at the marketing section.


What Next?


If you do not have a domain, register one that includes your keyword or is your keyword. If you do not want to spend the money, sign up for a free .tk domain name, or other free domain name, such as on weebly or 000webhost. Keep your domain a reasonable length too, as google hates those super long domain names. If you already have a domain that is somewhat similar to your keyword, don't worry, it should still work.
